After a bit of back and forth with the editors, I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to divulge the chosen name for my forthcoming column in Abu Dhabi’s The National covering my travels around Africa. It’s … “Around Africa.” OK, so it doesn’t exactly send anyone reeling.
But look, I like “Around Africa.” It vaguely suggests what I aim to be doing (going down to Cape Town on the west side and circling up again on the east), without committing to a fixed itinerary. I could, for example, just be wandering around Africa aimlessly. Lots of wiggle room there.
Note that while I do enjoy visiting some out-of-the-way places, this is not about crazy-man stuff like Riann Manser’s circumnavigation of Africa on a bicycle (good Lord), or even Dan Morrison’s madcap Nile journey, mentioned previously. [africa365.co.za]
Hats off to them and also to Ismat Abidi, whose “On the Road” column at The National has wrapped up. “Around Africa” will fill her slot. Ismat recently completed a six-month jaunt from Abu Dhabi to London to San Francisco to Los Angeles to Sydney to Melbourne to Thailand to Cambodia to Vietnam to Laos to Japan to Hong Kong to China back to Abu Dhabi to Tanzania up Kilimanjaro down to Zanzibar back to Abu Dhabi again to London.
